THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Daniil Medvedev will once again be crowned the world number one next Monday after Novak Djokovic’s Roland-Garros points from last season fall away but the Russian will have to wait out Wimbledon to see if the Serb can challenge him for it. Medvedev overcame Ilya Ivashka in a tight straight-set win on Friday to further tune up his promising but as of yet incomplete skills on grass but he faces a reasonably winnable fixture against Adrian Mannarino on Saturday. World number 70 Mannarino came back from a set down to beat Brandon Nakashima on Friday and he impressed with a shock straight-sets victory over Alex de Minaur the round before. It would be a surprise but not outside the realms of possibility to see the Frenchman stun Medvedev here as some of his best performances have come on grass over the years – including winning his only ATP title to date at this very tournament two years ago from which he remains the defending champion due to covid-19.
Mannarino won his first three meetings with Medvedev, albeit all before 2019 when the Russian really began to come into his own, including twice on grass here in 2016 and at Wimbledon in 2018. Much of this match depends on the level Medvedev can bring to the court but he won their most recent meeting in comfortable straight sets at the Miami Open in 2019 and he is twice the player he was back then. The sensible option is backing Medvedev to win outright but a one-off on the Russian to win in three could be valuable.
