World number 16 Danielle Collins has enjoyed a kind draw so far at the Guadalajara Masters, beating back-to-back qualifiers in straight sets to reach the round of 16. The 28-year-old was US number one briefly earlier this season after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty in her first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open and she has recently rediscovered something close to that form with runs to the round of 16 at the US Open and the semi-finals at last week’s San Diego Open. This will be the American’s first big challenge this week against the fourth seed, Maria Sakkari, despite the Greek’s recent shortcomings. World number six Sakkari beat Marta Kostyuk in straight sets on Wednesday to stop her losing streak at three matches since finishing runner-up to Mayar Sherif at the Emilia-Romagna Open but her last win against a significantly “top” player arguably came back in May, where she defeated Coco Gauff at the Italian Open.
Sakkari should be winning this match on ability but her mentality is nowhere near what is required of a top 10 player right now, whereas Collins often overachieves via that department. Back the American to win outright here, with three sets likely.
