World number 32 Dan Evans won his first ever match at Roland-Garros at the seventh time of trying with a straight[-sets result over Francisco Cerundolo on his 32nd birthday. The Brit has found a way to transcribe his silky game to the clay in recent seasons but it will take some doing to better his run at the Monte-Carlo Open last season, where he beat Novak Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz and David Goffin before eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated him. World number 95 Mikael Ymer stunned Gael Monfils here last season on his way to the third round and he got this year’s campaign underway well with a straight-sets victory over the retuning James Duckworth. 23-year-old Ymer is certainly better than his current world ranking but the Swede looks the underdog in this first tour-level meeting with Evans, with Duckworth his first win on clay this year.
