World number 35 Dan Evans faces number 36 Federico Delbonis here in a really intriguing, tough match to call. 31-year-old Evans won their only previous meeting in straight sets at Wimbledon back in 2019 but Delbonis, also 31, is certainly the more comfortable player on clay. Neither come to Madrid in much form, with Evans recently losing plenty of ranking points from his run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open last season and taking a three-match losing streak into the first round after early exits in Barcelona and Munich. Delbonis has lost seven of his last eight on tour after a defeat by Marton Fucsovics last time out at the Barcelona Open, though, and his poor form on his best surface is perhaps the most concerning of the two. Back Evans to win at least a set here given his record against the Argentine, leaving the winner up to chance.
