Houston’s fifth seed Cristian Garin has endured one of the tougher starts to a new season in recent times but back-to-back wins over Jack Sock and Jordan Thompson on his favoured clay will be music to his ears. The 25-year-old won the most recent of his five career ATP titles, all on clay, at last season’s Chile Open and he won his first ever here in Houston back in 2019. However, 24-year-old Taylor Fritz is the toughest fixture in this draw right now. The second seed is at a career-high ATP world ranking of 13th after winning a surprise Masters title at Indian Wells, beating Rafael Nadal in the final, and he played like it on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over Alejandro Tabilo. Garin is something of an anomaly right now with such poor form so far this season mingling with the relief of winning on his most comfortable surface, so the sensible call is taking Fritz to win at least a set as the likelier winner. The American should be able to find a way through to the semi-finals, though.
