This is a tougher-than-it-looks call between world number 43 Cristian Garin and number 141 Gugo Grenier, both 26 years old. Garin was handed a huge lifeline when his original first round opponent, last season’s finalist Matteo Berrettini, was forced to pull out with covid-19 and he made the most of it in three-sets against lucky loser Elias Ymer. The Chilean faces a second-successive lucky loser here in Hugo Grenier, which looks an absolute dream draw on the face of it, but Grenier’s five-set victory over fellow qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler is impressive stuff. The Frenchman is probably the better-suited to grass here against a clay specialist like Garin and furthermore the Chilean has been struggling with form for large parts of this season. Garin made it to the round of 16 here last season on a similarly kind draw, beating three players ranked outside the top 100 but conceding at least a set in each, and taking Grenier to win at least one set here looks the shrewd move.
