THE PREDICTION
13-time Roland-Garros champion Rafael Nadal made short work of Jordan Thompson on Monday, conceding just six games to the Aussie. The 35-year-old won a Men’s record-breaking 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open back in January in just his second tournament back since a long injury lay-off with a recurring foot injury and he claimed the first three tournaments of his season before losing to Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells, hampered there by a rib issue suffered in the semi-finals against Carlos Alcaraz. More recently the Spaniard’s foot has reared its ugly head to see him struggle to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open, where he lost for the first time to eventual champion Alcaraz, and then limp to a defeat against Denis Shapovalov at the Italian Open last time out.
World number 139 Corentin Moutet claimed one of the biggest results of his young career on Monday, coming back from a set down to beat former champion Stan Wawrinka in four. The 23-year-old will face his idol a first time on court here but much of his silky shot-making, frustrating for opponents but entertaining for fans, is likely to be neutralised by fellow left-hander Nadal. How far Nadal can go this year in Paris is anybody’s guess but counting him out against anybody at the French Open is a fool’s errand. The Spaniard has lost just three times here in 17 years, twice to Novak Djokovic, and he should be able to oust tricky Moutet in straight sets here on his way to at least the quarter-finals.
