World number 16 Coco Gauff conceded just two games against Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova on Thursday in a big statement of intent at the Madrid Open. The 18-year-old proved herself excellent on the clay last season with a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and a second WTA title won at the Emilia-Romagna Open on the surface and she reached the final of last week’s Stuttgart Open alongside Shuai Zhang in the Women’s Doubles.

World number 44 Yulia Putintseva is at her best on the clay and after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Istanbul Open last week she overcame a tough opening draw in Madrid, beating Shelby Rogers in straight sets. The 27-year-old won her second WTA title at last season’s Budapest open, with both her titles coming on clay.
THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Coco Gauff put in a huge performance on Thursday to conceded just two games to Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova and the American should be considered a serious threat to any player in Madrid. Yulia Putintseva is an excellent clay-court player but a three-set defeat to Gauff at last season’s Italian Open looks a fairly solid benchmark for what may transpire here. Backing Gauff to win outright seems sensible given Putintseva’s recent form but the American prodigy should be taking this in two.
