THE PREDICTION

18-year-old Coco Gauff will break the top 10 for a first time in her career after overcoming a big fightback by Naomi Osaka to win a thrilling clash at the Silicon Valley Classic. Beating former world number one Osaka on a US hardcourt is something few players can boast and it feels hugely significant ahead of the US Open next month, with Gauff recently reaching her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros as runner-up to Iga Swiatek. World number four Paula Badosa navigated past qualifier Elizabeth Mandlik in three tight sets on Thursday in a fairly choppy return to the tour since reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old is perfectly comfortable on this surface and in these conditions as last season’s Indian Wells champion, where she beat Gauff in their first meeting, but the American won their second earlier this year at the Qatar Open. Beating Osaka makes Gauff the tournament favourite here and the good it will do for her confidence should be plain to see in this quarter-final. Back the teenager to win outright.
