THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Naomi Osaka will be targeting a return to the top 20 ahead of the US Open next month and the former world number one has moved back inside the top 40 in the live rankings after beating Qinwen Zheng in three sets on Tuesday. The 24-year-old has never enjoyed her tennis on the clay and grass but after some promising displays on her return on hardcourts earlier this year it will be fascinating to watch her likely resurgence across the rest of the season. This is a seriously tough draw early-on, though, against 18-year-old Coco Gauff, who entered San Jose this week at a career-high WTA world ranking of 11th. The American recently reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros, losing to world number one Iga Swiatek, and after a solid grass swing she looked the business on Tuesday with just one game conceded to Anhelina Kalinina. Osaka leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after taking their most recent meeting in Cincinnati last August and this kind of match brings the best out of the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Even with such little match practice, Osaka is a true world-beater on this surface and it is hard to see her losing without a stellar performance from Gauff. Perhaps taking three sets is a suitable alternative to siding with a winner here but otherwise backing Osaka to win at least a set seems the sensible call.
