World number 15 Coco Gauff is yet to drop a set at the Italian Open after beating fellow American Madison Brengle in two on Wednesday, backing up an excellent result over Angelique Kerber. The 18-year-old is excellent on clay, with a run to the semi-finals here last season ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Gauff took that form straight into a second WTA title at the Emilia-Romagna Open before reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros – her best Grand Slam showing to date.
MARIA SAKKARI
World number four Maria Sakkari dismissed in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova in impressive fashion on Wednesday to get her Italian Open campaign underway, The fourth seed has struggled to impose herself in recent tournaments, failing to win back-to-back matches since finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells back in March. 26-year-old Sakkari beat Swiatek at Roland-Garros last season before losing to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in the semi-finals.
THE PREDICTION
Coco Gauff beat Maria Sakkari in three sets in the second round of last season’s Italian Open but the Greek has won three of their four meetings over the last few years to make for a likely thriller here. Sakkari beat Gauff in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open back in February on her favoured hardcourt but Gauff is fast-becoming one of the top players on clay on tour and backing the American to win at least a set seems a sensible move here in leaving the winner up to chance.
