THE PREDICTION

World number 23 Coco Gauff was exceptional on Wednesday, taking out the third seed Paula Badosa in assured straight sets to back-up strong wins over Shelby Rogers and Simona Halep’s vanquisher Caroline Garcia. The 17-year-old is also through to the semi-finals of the Women’s Doubles event at this newly-crowned Masters tournament alongside Jessica Pegula, who next opponent Maria Sakkari ousted in the singles yesterday. World number six Sakkari lost a second-successive WTA tour final to Anett Kontaveit two weeks ago at the St. Petersburg Open but she has started strongly once again in Qatar.

Gauff was the winner of their most recent encounter in a three-set victory at the Italian Open last season but Sakkari has won both of their hardcourt meetings including in the second round of the Abu Dhabi Tennis Open at the start of 2021. This match looks very close indeed but despite Gauff’s campaign so far taking Sakkari to win at least a set seems the sensible move here – even if the Greek does end up losing to this future star.
