THE LOWDOWN

World number four Coco Gauff suffered a fairly comprehensive defeat in her WTA Finals debut, losing in straight sets to Caroline Garcia on Tuesday. The 18-year-old is making her debut in both the Singles and Doubles events, alongside partner Jessica Pegula, this week in Fort Worth but an opening defeat to Chinese pair Xu and Yang was not in the script. Gauff set new benchmarks this season, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros and breaking the top 10 to keep her remarkable star rising ever higher.

World number eight Daria Kasatkina drew the short straw on her WTA Finals debut, losing to in straight sets to world number one Iga Swiatek. Getting that hurdle out of the way could benefit the Russian moving forwards, though, with her next two matches must wins if she is to qualify for the semi-finals. 25-year-old Kasatkina recently won her fifth and sixth WTA titles at the Silicon Valley Classic and Granby Open but her best achievement this season was reaching the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland-Garros.

THE PREDICTION

This is a must-win match for both players, especially as they lost their respective openers in straight sets, and their head-to-head record pulls heavily in Daria Kasatkina’s favour. The Russian beat Coco Gauff in straight sets at the Stuttgart Open back in April to lead the American 2-0, with Gauff yet to take a set in this particular match-up. The American will be backed to the hilt by a partisan crowd at Fort Worth but this looks a difficult task against Kasatkina’s uber-consistent game. Back Kasatkina to win at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
