18-year-old Coco Gauff put in one of the performances of her career on Sunday to beat an impressive, in-form Shuai Zhang in two tight sets amidst an electric atmosphere on Arthur Ashe. The teenager has passed another huge milestone in her short but already stellar career by reaching all four Grand Slam quarter-finals before her 19th birthday, with a first final reached in June at Roland-Garros ended by Iga Swiatek. The American is also likely to break the top 10 on the WTA tour for a first time when the new rankings are announced next week.

Former world number four Caroline Garcia is yet to drop a set at the US Open as she extended her wining streak to 10 matches with an assured performance against Alison Riske-Amritraj. The 28-year-old won the third Masters title of her career at the Cincinnati Open three weeks ago to make it three titles won this season on three different surfaces after claiming the Bad Homburg Open on grass and the Poland Open on clay. Garcia is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time, emulating her best Grand Slam run at Roland-Garros in 2017.

It is no understatement to suggest that the 2022 US Open winner will come from this quarter-final as red-hot Caroline Garcia brings her 10-match winning streak, now the longest on the WTA tour, to face home favourite and Roland-Garros runner-up Coco Gauff on Tuesday. There is more than just a spot of symbolism in Gauff completing the perfect narrative at this season’s US Open by winning her first Grand Slam title at 18 years old at the same place the departing Serena Williams claimed her first of 23 way back in 1999 and she looks ready to do so after a stellar campaign so far. Garcia’s run includes names like Maria Sakkari, Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, Petra Kvitova and Bianca Andreescu, though, and the Frenchwoman is a true world-beater whilst all the facets of her blistering game are lined up like this summer. Gauff leads their head-to-head 2-0 after a three0set victory at Indian Wells almost a year ago and a straight-sets victory at the Qatar Masters in February but this version of Garcia is a different opponent altogether.
