THE LOWDOWN
18-year-old Coco Gauff continues to make huge strides towards her future legend status in tennis after qualifying for her WTA Finals debut in both singles and doubles. Gauff set a new career-high WTA world ranking of fourth this week after reaching the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Masters but her biggest achievement so far was reaching a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros this summer, where she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek.
29-year-old Caroline Garcia comes into the WTA Finals ranked at world number six, just two places from her career-high of fourth she set back in 2018 the year after making her WTA Finals debut. The Frenchwoman burst back into the kind of form that saw her touted as a future world number one all those years ago to win three WTA titles this season on a surface apiece: the Bad Homburg Open on grass, Poland Open on clay and a third Masters title claimed at the Cincinnati Open.
THE PREDICTION
This looks like the best match-up of the four opening fixtures at the WTA Finals between world number four Coco Gauff and number six Caroline Garcia. Of the two, Coco Gauff is the player you would have expected to be here if asked at the start of the season as the teenager continues to exceed heavy expectations. 29-year-old Garcia is the surprising WTA Finalist after spending much of the last two seasons in the wilderness seemingly never to return but the Frenchwoman has found her unplayable best at times this season. However, a strange and sudden split with her coach this week is not the best preparation ahead of facing the top seven players on tour this week and it remains to be seen how Garcia fares after coming off the boil in recent weeks. Gauff leads their head-to-head record 2-1 after first beating Garcia at Indian Wells last season, with Garcia taking the second of their meetings this year in straight sets at the US Open. On current form, back Gauff to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
