THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Coco Gauff set a career-high WTA world ranking of 15th earlier this month after a run to the round of 16 at the Miami Open was ended by eventual champion Iga Swiatek. The current world number 16 is excellent on the clay, with her second WTA title coming on the surface at last season’s Emilia-Romagna Open, but she lost her first of the year on it last time out to Daria Kasatkina at the Stuttgart Open. Gauff did reach the Women’s Doubles final, however, alongside Shuai Zhang for some much-needed practice on the surface and she looks the solid favourite to come through this first meeting with Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. The world number 89 qualified well to reach the main draw at the Madrid Open but she has been far from her best level for a number of years, with her most recent WTA title coming at the Bogota Open in 2018. Both players are comfortable on this surface but the crowd is likely to pull in one direction and that makes backing Gauff to win outright the reasonable call.
