THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Coco Gauff reached the round of 16 at the Madrid Open last week before a well-contested defeat to Simona Halep. The teenager fantastically reached the semi-finals here last season via brilliant victories over Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka and an admittedly injured Ash Barty before losing to the eventual champion Iga Swiatek and she took that form straight into a title-winning campaign on clay at the Emilia-Romagna Open. The American has some serious ranking points to protect over the next few weeks, then, as she enters Rome at a career-high WTA ranking of 15th and there is some unfinished business here after she lost in straight sets to Angelique Kerber in the round of 16 at Wimbledon last summer.
Former world number one Kerber is riding a three-match losing streak from a three-set defeat to Swiatek at Indian Wells back in March and she withdrew altogether from the Madrid Open last week. If the three-time Grand Slam champion has a weakest surface it is clay, whilst Gauff has already proven her ability on the surface with a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season.
