THE PREDICTION

This looks set to be a blockbuster rivalry for the next decade between two supremely talented, young Americans in world number 12 Coco Gauff and number 25 Amanda Anisimova. 18-year-old Gauff looked exceptional in a straight-sets victory over Mihaela Buzarnescu on Thursday after a choppy three-setter in the first round against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, whilst 20-year-old Anisimova came back from a set down to beat Lauren Davis in a tight clash.

Gauff’s name will forever be emotionally tied to Wimbledon after she announced herself to the world stage here in 2019, beating Venus Williams in the first round with a symbolic changing of the guard on her way to the round of 16. The teenager reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros last month, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek, and that eclipses Anisimova’s best run to date after she reached the semi-finals in Paris in 2018. Gauff beat Anisimova in their only previous meeting at last season’s Emilia-Romagna Open on her way to a second WTA title and at this moment in time the younger American has the edge in this contest. Two of the best backhands in the business face-off here but Gauff has a whole host of weapons and she will likely garner the vast majority of the support too, so take her as outright winner here.
