At world number 37, Alize Cornet was one of the very toughest players for a seed to draw in the opening round at Wimbledon and Yulia Putintseva felt that sting in a straight-sets defeat to the Frenchwoman. 32-year-old Cornet reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time earlier this season at the Australian Open and she has always had the ability to go further, if not the consistency. This looks a winnable second rounder for the former world number 11 against Claire Liu, who nonetheless impressed with a straight-sets victory over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz.
