World number six Aryna Sabalenka set a career-high WTA world ranking of second this time last season, in between semi-final exits at Wimbledon and here in New York to Karolina Pliskova and Leylah Fernandez, respectively. The 24-year-old won the most recent of her 10 WTA titles at the Abu Dhabi Open at the start of 2021 but she has since reached three finals, twice in Stuttgart this and last season and more recently ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The Belarussian has been struggling with her most potent weapon, a world-beating power serve, all season long but she remains a potent threat to all comers without it.
THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Catherine Harrison qualified without dropping a set this week to make her US Open debut and she won her first ever Grand Slam match last month at Wimbledon with a straight-sets result over Arantxa Rus. This is a significantly bigger challenge against Sabalenka, though, who should be coming through this kind opener with relative ease. Back the Belarussian to win in straight sets.
