THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough call between current world number 112 Ugo Humbert, who has endured the worst season of his career by some distance this year, and world number six Casper Ruud. In normal service former world number 25 Humbert is at his best on grass as a 2021 Halle Open champion and a five-set victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Monday could be the catalyst his season needs after contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open this season. The Frenchman leads Ruud 2-1 in their head-to-head record with the 23-year-old Norwegian claiming their meeting on clay at the Hamburg Open back in 2020 on his best surface. However, the third seed claimed his first victory at Wimbledon on Monday in straight sets over Albert Ramos-Vinolas to cast aside a poor showing at Queen’s two weeks ago.
Ruud finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in his first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros earlier this month and on form he should be backed to win outright here, probably in four sets. However, the nagging doubt of Humbert’s eventual return to grace on a surface that suits his game suggests taking the Frenchman to win at least a set is the sensible compromise.
