THE PREDICTION

This will be a fascinating clash between two semi-final underdogs who caused massive upsets on Saturday. Former number three Stefanos Tsitsipas is a two-time champion here at the Konte-Carlo Open, by far his most successful tournament on Earth, but overcoming man of the moment Jannik Sinner in three thrilling sets yesterday looked a step too far for the resurgent Greek, especially after going down a break in the third. Former number two Ruud enjoyed an even bigger shock in ousting an out-of-sorts world number one Novak Djokovic, also a two-time Monte-Carlo champion, in three sets. The 25-year-old is the first Norwegian ever to beat a world number one on tour, finally breaking his duck against both Djokovic and tennis’ top spot, and he finds himself in the final of a clay Masters for the first time with plenty to prove after finishing runner-up at Roland-Garros in each of the past two seasons.

Ruud leads Tsitsipas 2-1 in their interesting head-to-head, including a straight-sets victory in their only meeting on clay, but Tsitsipas certainly has the edge on this court in Monte-Carlo and he will likely have the majority of the support after rediscovering his sumptuous best in these conditions this week. Ruud beat Tsitsipas in straight sets at the Los Cabos Open in February to claim their most recent match but Tsitsipas’ results over Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner this week just-about eclipse Ruud’s herculean efforts on this court. Tsitsipas’ 10-17 record in finals is a concern but Ruud’s 10-10 record reads worse in ranking points, having never won a tournament higher than ATP 250 level. Back the two-time champion to edge this contest to cap off a resurgent week.

TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN
