THE LOWDOWN

World number four Casper Ruud beat Andrey Rublev in straight sets on Saturday night to reach the ATP Finals finale, doing one better than his excellent debut last season. The 23-year-old has enjoyed his best season on tour, winning a further three ATP Finals to take his career total to nine, but his most prestigious finals have ended in defeat so far: to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open and US Open and to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros.

World number eight Novak Djokovic threw off claims that he should retire from the ATP Finals after seeming to suffer in his three-set victory over Daniil Medvedev, beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets on Saturday to make it four wins from four in Turin. The former world number one pulled back within one of Rafael Nadal’s Men’s Singles Grand Slam record to claim his 21st major trophy at Wimbledon this summer and the news that he has been cleared to play the Australian Open next January immediately makes him the favourite to draw level on 22.

THE PREDICTION

Novak Djokovic will be aiming to level Roger Federer’s ATP Finals record on Sunday, with victory over Casper Ruud taking him to six titles in the year-end showpiece event. The Serb has dropped just one set this week to Daniil Medvedev and his straight-sets victories over fierce forehanders Fritz and Rublev suggests he has the tools to avoid an upset against this impressive Norwegian. In fact, the Serb has yet to drop a set to Ruud in three wins from three encounters, including in the round robin here in Turin last season and this year’s Italian Open. Oddly enough, all four of Djokovic and Ruud’s matches have been in Italy but the result looks set to be the same here as well as the setting. Back Djokovic to make a huge statement ahead of 2023 by beating Ruud in straight sets.
