CASPER RUUD
23-year-old Casper Ruud will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least seventh after overcoming Holger Rune in four sets on Wednesday night. The Norwegian has long been considered a potential Roland-Garros champion in the future but this run has come sooner than expected after struggling at previous majors, with this his first semi-final. Ruud is riding a nine-match winning streak from defending his Geneva Open title two weeks ago, with seven of his eight ATP titles coming on his favoured clay.
MARIN CILIC
World number 23 Marin Cilic is playing some of the best tennis of his illustrious career, seemingly from out of the blue. The 33-year-old beat Andrey Rublev in five tight sets on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals of Roland-Garros for the first time and he is one win away from completing the set as a former finalist at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Cilic won the US Open in 2014 but he endured a few seasons of poor form and fitness before finding success again last year, where he won his 19th and 20th ATP titles at the Stuttgart Open and St. Petersburg Open
THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Marin Cilic has been vastly impressive at Roland-Garros with some of the best tennis of his career, possibly ever on clay. The Croat looks set for a few more titles this season if he can maintain what appears to be an improved mental outlook rather than any physical changes but he will desperately want to reach the final here to complete that set. 23-year-old Casper Ruud looked set to face Stefanos Tsitsipas at this stage in a showdown on clay between two of the likeliest new champions in Paris over the next few years but he impressively ousted a rising Holger Rune instead. Ruud is exceptional on clay but he is in uncharted waters at this stage of a major and this match may well come down to experience. Ruud leads Cilic 2-0 in their head-to-head but both matches have been tight and the full five could be needed to separate the two here.
Cilic has lost two of five Grand Slam semi-finals, to Novak Djokovic at the US Open in 2015 and Andy Murray in 2010. Backing the Croat to win at least two sets here and leaving the winner up to chance seems the sensible way to avoid picking a very difficult result.
