THE PREDICTION
World number eight Casper Ruud looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Emil Ruusuvuori on Thursday to reach the third round of what is shaping up to be a promising Roland-Garros campaign. The 23-year-old has never made it past this stage in Paris at the Grand Slam he seems most capable of winning at least once in his life as one of the best on clay of his generation and he looks to have a suitably winnable fixture on Saturday against world number 35 Lorenzo Sonego, whom he has beaten in each of their three previous meetings. The 27-year-old is yet to drop a set at Roland-Garros against Peter Gojowczyk and Joao Sousa but Ruud will be a considerable step up in quality.
Sonego made the round of 16 here back in 2020 in what proved to be his best season on tour to date, although a run to the semi-finals of the Italian Open last season is proof of what he is capable. The Italian has struggled for consistent form this season and Ruud looks in too good a shape to lose to him for a first time here. Back the Norwegian to win outright.
