THE PREDICTION
World number five Casper Ruud is the top seed and defending champion here in Gstaad after a hot streak last season saw him win three tournaments in a row in Sweden, Switzerland and Austria on his favoured clay. The 23-year-old is clearly one of the very top players on clay and he proved that by finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros back in June but he has lost three of his four matches since in a fairly understandable deceleration from a first Grand Slam final. That makes this a tricky call against rising Czech star Jiri Lehecka, who conceded just four games to Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Monday. The 20-year-old is probably at his best on a hardcourt, on which he reached the Rotterdam Open semi-finals back in February, but he will know to take this match to Ruud as the Norwegian has not won for almost a month. Ruud should come through this eventually but the suitably cautious pick for an accumulator is taking the top seed to win at least a set in a real potential upset.
