World number eight Casper Ruud had to work harder than he might have expected against an out of form Lorenzo Sonego on Saturday, taking the first set against the Italian before having to fight back from 1-2 down. The 23-year-old is riding a seven-match winning streak from claiming his eighth ATP title at the Geneva Open two weeks ago, in fact defending one of his now seven ATP titles on clay. Ruud is a solid candidate for a future champion here in Paris but this is his first time through to the round of 16.
HUBERT HURKACZ
World number 13 Hubert Hurkacz is yet to drop a set this campaign and he looked in excellent shape against in-for David Goffin on Saturday. The 25-year-old lost to Goffin in the first round of the Italian Open last time out but back-to-back quarter-final exits at the Monte-Carlo Open and the Madrid Open is pretty good going for the Pole on his least effective surface. Hurkacz set a huge benchmark for himself at last season’s Wimbledon with a stunning run to the semi-finals including victories over Daniil Medvedev and Roger Federer.
THE PREDICTION
It is a surprise to find that this is the first ever meeting on tor between Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz but what an occasion it could turn out to be. 23-year-old Ruud is the clear favourite on paper, or clay more literally, as one of the very top players on this surface but Hurkacz can be an top quality disruptor of his opponents’ strengths on his day and meeting him for the first time is always tricky. Ruud’s wobble against Sonego suggests backing both players to win at least a set here and leaving the winner up to chance is the sensible move.
