THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Casper Ruud’s last match on his favoured clay was a three-set defeat to Rafael Nadal in the final of Roland-Garros and he will likely thoroughly enjoy a return to the surface. The 23-year-old won three tournaments in a row this time last season at Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and there is no more prolific player at ATP 250 level than the Norwegian. This, however, could be a tough opener against world number 39 Francisco Cerundolo, who vastly impressed at Wimbledon in a four-set defeat to Rafael Nadal. The 23-year-old beat Pedro Sousa in straight sets on Tuesday for a steady start to the Nordea Open and at this early stage it could be said that the winner of this tournament will come from this round of 16 clash.
Ruud may take some time recalibrating on clay and he stopped Cerundolo’s run in the semi-finals of the Miami Open last month, fuelling perhaps some extra motivation for the Argentine. Ruud to win outright is the sensible option but taking Cerundolo to win at least a set seems a shrewd move.
