World number four Casper Ruud looked in much better shape than we have seen so far this season in a straight-sets victory over Ilya Ivashka on Friday. The 24-year-old finished runner-up here last season and he ended the year runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals but it has been a woeful start to 2023 so far. World number 32 Botic van de Zandschulp came back from a set down to beat Alexei Popyrin on Friday for a much better start to Miami than his immediate exit, to Ivashka, at Indian Wells last time out. Ruud has failed to win back-to-back matches since the group stage of the ATP Finals last November and this is an intriguing clash as Van de Zandschulp leads their head-to-head 2-1. The Dutchman has won at least a set in each of their three meetings so far and so taking him to do so again here looks the shrewd way to avoid picking an outright winner.
