19-year-old Ben Shelton will break the top 200 on the ATP tour for a first time next week after stunning Lorenzo Sonego in three sets on Tuesday in only his third tour match. The American prospect showed signs of this level a few weeks ago in a three-set epic defeat to John Isner that could have gone either way in Atlanta and he will be backed to the hilt here by a notoriously raucous home crowd in Cincinnati. World number five Casper Ruud will be hurting after a defeat from a set up to Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals of the Canada Masters on Saturday and potentially vulnerable here if he underestimates the challenge. The 23-year-old has been stunned early in a few tournaments recently, by Ryan Peniston at Queen’s and Francisco Cerundolo at the Bastad Open, to suggest there is a sliver of hope for home fans here. Backing Shelton to win at least a set off the back of the biggest day of his young career could be a shrewd move here but the sensible call remains taking Ruud to win outright. Given the gulf in their rankings, a small one-off on Shelton to pull off the upset may be worth it.
