World number seven Casper Ruud is riding a four-match winning streak after claiming the third ATP title of his season, and a ninth overall, at the Gstaad Open. The 23-year-old defended his 2021 title in Switzerland with an impressive comeback victory over Matteo Berrettini three weeks ago, although the Norwegian’s most impressive campaigns this season have ended in defeats in finals to two Spaniards: Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open and Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros. World number 42 Alex Molcan put in a solid display to oust Mackenzie McDonald on Monday as he continues to develop under the tutelage of Novak Djokovic’s ex-coach Marian Vajda. Both players would be more comfortable on their favoured clay, on which Rudd beat Molcan in their only previous meeting at the Munich Open back in April, but this could be an intriguing rematch at the Canada Masters. Ruud is on a streak but Molcan has more recent matches on a hard surface and that could see this go to a decider at the least. The suitably cautious move is taking Ruud to win at least a set but perhaps backing Molcan to snatch one is the more shrewd one-off option here.
