World number five Casper Ruud is the defending champion at the Gstaad Open and playing like it so far with two straight-set wins over Jiri Lehecka and Jaume Munar. The 23-year-old won three tournaments in three weeks this time last season at the Bastad Open, here in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel to add to a total of five ATP titles won in 2021 and now eight overall. Both Ruud and world number 40 Albert Ramos-Vinolas have won titles on clay this season, with Ramos-Vinolas claiming the fourth of his career at the Cordoba Open and Ruud taking the Buenos Aires and Geneva titles. 34-year-old Ramos-Vinolas is a challenge for anybody on his favoured clay but he has so far battled through two three-setters against Dominic Stricker and Nicolas Jarry. The Spaniard won his first three encounters with Ruud but since 2020 the Norwegian has claimed two back to trail 3-2 in their head-to-head. Back Ruud to win outright here with three sets a distinct possibility.
