THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Casper Ruud set a new career-high ATP world ranking of fifth after reaching a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros, where he promptly lost to his idol Rafael Nadal in straight sets. The Norwegian was the top seed at Queen’s Club last week but lost in the first round to a spirited Ryan Peniston in an understandable climb-down in intensity from his previous match. Ruud has won eight ATP titles so far, seven coming on clay and one on hard, but a run to the Miami Open final earlier this season depicts a player well capable of excelling across surfaces.
This is a pretty short straw to draw in the first round, though, as Ruud faces world number 41 Albert Ramos-Vinolas for a fifth time. The 34-year-old clay specialist leads their head-to-head 3-1, unsurprisingly all coming on clay, with Ruud taking his first win in their most recent meetings at the 2020 Chile Open. Ruud has improved wildly since their last meeting but the Norwegian may still be struggling with the Roland-Garros loss and Ramos-Vinolas does not go away. Four or five sets seem likely here and backing Ruud to eventually come through outright is not as cautious as it may appear.
