World number six Coco Gauff came back from a set down to beat Elise Mertens in an impressive turnaround on Friday, making it eight wins on the spin after claiming the biggest title of her career in Cincinnati two weeks ago. The 19-year-old had only just won her most prestigious title at the Washington 500 this time last month before surpassing that with style in Cincinnati and wins over the likes of Maria Sakkari, Marketa Vondrousova, Karolina Muchova and Iga Swiatek (for the first time) make her a genuine title contender here in New York. Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki also came back from a set down to beat Jennifer Brady on Friday to continue her remarkable return to tour from retirement.
