19-year-old Emma Raducanu enjoyed a Centre Court debut at Wimbledon on Monday, overcoming a tough grass-court opponent in Alison Van Uytvanck in two well-contested sets. The world number 11 burst onto the scene here last season as an unknown wildcard, riding the crest of a wave all the way to the round of 16 when she suffered breathing difficulties and was forced to retire. That momentum only grew at the US Open, though, where the Brit qualified the hard way before blasting her way through the draw to the title without dropping a set – becoming the first qualifier to do so in New York. Now only just completing her first 12 months on the WTA tour, Raducanu’s fitness has been her biggest foe on court ever since the US Open and her team will be thoroughly pleased by the level she produced on Monday.
Former world number four Caroline Garcia is a seriously tough draw, though, especially at this moment in time as she comes in hot from winning the Bad Homburg Open last weekend. The 28-year-old now owns two titles on grass almost her career total of eight WTA titles and she avoided the post-title slump with a comeback win against Yuriko Miyazaki on Monday via a 10-point deciding tiebreak. The Frenchwoman was heavily strapped in her first round match and if Raducanu can up her intensity it would not be a surprise to see a retirement here. Raducanu’s matches should still be treated with caution until she can find a run without an injury scare but she beat Garcia in three sets at Indian Wells back in March and taking her to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems reasonable here.
