THE PREDICTION

World number five Caroline Garcia maintained her perfect record as the top seed in Monterrey with another straight-sets victory over Mayar Sherif, handing the Egyptian a first-set bagel. The 29-year-old ended last season as the form player on tour as the WTA Finals champion but she has occasionally faltered this season, particularly in the Lyon Open final as she lost to Alycia Parks last month. World number 42 Elise Mertens ended last year in poor form in singles tennis but she still ended up the WTA Finals doubles champion alongside Veronika Kudermetova. The 27-year-old showed some promising signs of coming back into form in Melbourne and a run to the semi-finals here suggests she could be ready to enjoy some better results on the incoming Sunshine Double but this looks too steep a climb right now. Garcia leads their head-to-head record 4-2 after most recently beating Mertens en-route to the Cincinnati Masters title last summer and she can be backed to take this in straight sets.
