THE LOWDOWN

World number six Caroline Garcia broke Iga Swiatek’s serve early in their match on Thursday but that only focused the Pole into doubling down to win in straight sets. 29-year-old Garcia beat Coco Gauff in her WTA Finals opener, though, making this match with Daria Kasatkina a straight-up shoot-out to claim the last remaining semi-final berth. Garcia has won three WTA titles this season, on each of the three surfaces, but her best work has come on hardcourts with a third Masters title claimed at the Cincinnati Open and a run to the semi-finals of the US Open.

World number eight Daria Kasatkina lost to Iga Swiatek in straight sets in her opener at Fort Worth but beat a dispirited Coco Gauff in two on Thursday night to bring an identical record to Garcia’s to this shoot-out. The 25-year-old won two WTA titles from the Silicon Valley Classic and Granby Open but her consistency over the season is why she has achieved her WTA Finals debut. Kasatkina reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland-Garros this summer before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling contest between Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina as they battle it out for the remaining semi-final spot. Garcia was the winner of their first encounter at the 2019 Wuhan Open but Kasatkina returned the favour in three sets at last season’s Silicon Valley Classic to level their head-to-head record at 1-1. Given their identical records at Fort Worth so far, three sets seems a likely outcome here and perhaps a useful option in avoiding picking the winner. However, the suitably cautious pick looks to be backing Garcia to earn at least a set here as she has done in their two previous matches .
