World number seven Aryna Sabalenka served more double faults than aces on Friday but she also produced a lot of winners in a tight straight-sets victory over Shuai Zhang. The 24-year-old has been struggling with her usually world-class serve all season long but she has still managed to reach two finals on tour, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Stuttgart Open and to Ekaterina Alexandrova at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. World number 35 Caroline Garcia has, in contrast, won her two finals in 2022 at the Bad Homburg Open and Poland Open in what has been her best season on tour since 2017, following which she set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth a year later. The Frenchwoman beat in-form and firing Jessica Pegula yesterday with her brutal brand of offensive tennis and she has also ousted the likes of Elise Mertens and fourth-seed Maria Sakkari this week as she continues her summer hot-streak.
The pair faced each other three times in 2018, with Sabalenka taking their first two meetings in three sets both here in Cincinnati and the Beijing Open before Garcia claimed a straight-sets victory at the WTA Finals. Given that Garcia has won at least a set in each of their three matches, and Sabalenka’s continuing erratic performances, take the Frenchwoman to earn at least a set here as the just-about likelier of two very capable finalists.
