THE PREDICTION
World number six Aryna Sabalenka will play her first match on tour since mid-June, due in large part to the Russian/Belarussian ban at Wimbledon, and she takes a two-match losing streak into the Silicon Valley Classic. The 24-year-old has endured a mixed season of struggles and flurries of brilliance, with her biggest weapon – her serve – going missing for large parts of the year. Sabalenka has still managed to finish runner-up twice at two tournaments this season, to Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Libema Open in June and to Iga Swiatek at the Stuttgart Open in May, and if she brings her world-class serve with her to the North American hardcourt swing she should be considered a serious and constant threat to any tournament she enters. This is still a tricky call against world number 168 Caroline Dolehide, though, because we do not know what version of Sabalenka will take to court. For that reason, the suitably cautious option is taking the Belarussian to win at least a set or leaving this opener alone altogether as a litmus test for the incoming swing.
