THE PREDICTION
There is no better place for a first meeting between two of the brightest young players on the tour than a final on their favoured clay and this should be a thriller between 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz and 20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti. The pair look set to battle it out many more times over the next decade or so at the top of the game but world number 62 Musetti’s place in the Hamburg Open final comes as something of a surprise after what has been a tough 12 months since his breakthrough last year. The Italian was two sets up against Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 at last season’s Roland-Garros before running out of steam and his confidence has looked shot practically ever since. A straight-sets victory over red-hot Francisco Cerundolo on Saturday is mightily impressive work given his form but his ceiling on this surface is very high indeed.
Carlos Alcaraz is several steps above his year-group peers after winning four ATP titles this season, including two Masters titles from Miami and Madrid, and he will become the youngest top five player on tour since Rafael Nadal in 2005 no matter the outcome of this final. The Spaniard overcame a tough test from Alex Molcan on Saturday to show a clear improvement throughout the week and he looks the solid favourite to weather Musetti’s best, sometimes intermittent level. It would not be a surprise, for example, to see Musetti race away with the first set only for Alcaraz to fight back to win. That could be a valuable combination in the markets but the sensible pick is taking Alcaraz to win outright.
