World number one Carlos Alcaraz did well to beat in-form Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets on Wednesday to put a poor performance against Felix Auger-Aliassime at last week’s Swiss Indoors behind him. The 19-year-old has faltered a little since winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open, which is to be fully expected, but he looks ready to chase his next goal now as he aims to become year-end number one. With Rafael Nadal out of the draw, Alcaraz can do plenty of damage this week in the rankings but he faces a tentatively resurgent force in Grigor Dimitrov. Former world number three Dimitrov has beaten the likes of Andrey Rublev and Botic van de Zandschulp in recent matches for some stand-out results but a loss to Daniil Medvedev in Vienna last week suggests he is below the level required to seriously trouble Alcaraz right now. This should be an exhilarating watch but back the Spaniard to come through the outright winner.
