World number five Carlos Alcaraz handed Facundo Bagnis a first-set bagel in a comprehensive win on Friday as he continues a rock-solid defence of his maiden ATP title at the Umag Open. The Spaniard claimed his first of now five ATP titles here, with four more added this season from the Rio Open, Barcelona Open and two Masters events in Madrid and Miami. Whilst 20-year-old Giulio Zeppieri is the elder player here the Italian is by far the less experienced, with his first ever tour-level win coming just this week. With three to his name now after beating Bernabe Zapata Miralles on Friday he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 133rd no matter the outcome of this first meeting with Alcaraz. Zeppieri has nothing to lose in these uncharted waters and his confidence could well make him Alcaraz’s toughest challenge this week. Backing the Spaniard to win in straight sets still seems reasonable but you could be forgiven for going outright inside an accumulator.
