Defending Umag Open champion Carlos Alcaraz got his campaign underway with a straightforward victory over Norbert Gombos on Thursday. The 19-year-old became the youngest world number five since Rafael Nadal this week after a run to the Hamburg Open final, where he lost in three tight sets to Lorenzo Musetti. Alcaraz claimed his first ATP title here last season but he has added four more this year, including two Masters titles from the Miami Open and Madrid Open and a further two on clay from Rio and Barcelona. World number 120 Facundo Bagnis is yet to drop a set this week with solid wins over Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Corentin Moutet but the Argentine is likely to fall in much the same way as Gombos did in the round of 16.
