THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Elise Mertens is riding a three-match losing streak on grass coming into Wimbledon but the Belgian number one is the epitome of dependable at Grand Slams. Mertens has reached at least the third round in each of her last 17 major tournaments, reaching back-to-back quarter-finals at the US Open in 2019 and 2020 and a career-best semi-final at the Australian Open back in 2018. This will be a stern test, though, in a first meeting with 20-year-old Camila Osorio. The Colombian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd back in April but she has yet to win a match on grass this month and Mertens should be able to navigate through eventually. Osorio beat 32nd Ekaterina Alexandrova here last season, though, making a cautious pick for Mertens to win at least a set seem wise.
