THE PREDICTION

This should be a match full of blistering forehands and unforced errors between two of the more instinctive and unpr3edictanble talents on the WTA tour. World number 41 Sloane Stephens is the defending champion of this tournament despite winning it in Guadalajara last season and she came back from a set down to oust Varvara Gracheva on Thursday to prove herself dialled in this week. World number 68 Camila Giorgi is yet to drop a set this week after two solid wins over Mayar Sherif and Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. The Italian is far better than her current diminished ranking suggests but then again so is former world number three Stephens, who famously won the US Open in 2017. Giorgi leads their head-to-head record 3-2 but their most recent encounter was in Osaka back in 2019. Given Stephens’ dropped set yesterday, back Giorgi to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
