30-year-old Camila Giorgi is the defending champion at the Canadian Open after riding some of the form of her career this time last year to an unlikely first Masters title. The Italian has always been a player capable of deep troughs and high peaks in form and it will be fascinating to see how she takes to court in Toronto given her current three-match losing streak since reaching the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International in late June. This could be something of a mini homecoming for 19-year-old Emma Raducanu this week as she makes her debut at the Canadian Open in the city she was born. The British number one will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of ninth on Monday after reaching the quarter-finals of the Citi Open this week, with a battling victory over Camila Osorio as impressive as her defeat to Liudmila Samsonova was a little underwhelming. Raducanu will be welcomed as the favourite here and her better recent form makes taking her to win at least a set against the ever-enigmatic Giorgi a suitably cautious move here.
