World number 66 Camila Giorgi is much better than her current WTA world ranking suggests but the Italian has always been a player of peaks and troughs. The 30-year-old reached the round of 16 at the Canada Masters two weeks ago as defending champion before losing in three sets to Jessica Pegula and that defeat looked to spill over into a three-set loss to Marta Kostyuk in Cincinnati. World number 56 Anna Bondar has a decent chance at the upset here, odd given their current rankings, but the Hungarian has struggled since reaching the quarter-finals of the Palermo Open on her favoured clay. A hardcourt suits Giorgi here and she can be tentatively backed to get over her slump to edge things outright.
