THE PREDICTION
30-year-old Camila Giorgi’s three-set defeat to Jessica Pegula in the first round of the Madrid Open last week does not look so bad now after her vanquisher finished runner-up to Ons Jabeur on Saturday. Giorgi won her first Masters title at the Canadian Open last season and she could be about to rediscover that form on home soil as the highest-ranked Italian on the WTA tour. However, Giorgi has won just one match at the Italian Open over the years on her least effective surface and this looks a really tight call against 29-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic after the Australian recently reached a quarter-final on clay at the Istanbul Open. Giorgi was the winner of tour only tour-level meeting back in 2019 and again in the Eastbourne International qualifiers last summer on grass but this is their first meeting on clay. After her exploits in Madrid, back Giorgi to win at least a set here but this match is worth leaving out of an accumulator.
