THE LOWDOWN

World number eight Cam Norrie is making his Laver Cup debut after establishing himself as a top plyer on the ATP tour over the last two seasons. The 27-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon this season before a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic, now a Team Europe teammate, for the stand-out of an incredible series of achievements, although his Masters title at Indian Wells this time last year was particularly special. Norrie came into the ATP Finals last season as a replacement for the injured Stefanos Tsitsipas but he may well qualify for a full debut this season on merit alone.

World number 12 Taylor Fritz is enjoying the best season of his career after claiming a first Masters title at Indian Wells back in March, where he overcame an injury-hampered Rafael Nadal in three sets. Fritz met Nadal again in his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon this summer and took the Spaniard to five sets in an incredibly encouraging, yet gut-wrenching defeat for the American. Fritz is making his second appearance at the Laver Cup, making his debut in 2019 with a 1-1 record in singles.

THE PREDICTION

World number eight Cam Norrie and number 12 Taylor Fritz will meet for the third time this season, and 11th overall, in a quick rematch from last week’s Davis Cup encounter. Norrie levelled their head-to-head record at 5-5 last week for Team Great Britain in Glasgow but the US claimed the overall tie to head through to the Davis Cup Finals later this year. Fritz, though, has struggled with his form ever since losing to Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, due in no small part to an aggravated foot injury. All 10 of their previous matches have been played on their favoured hardcourts, with Norrie leading indoors conditions 2-1 after last week’s victory. A deciding tiebreaker looks pretty likely here, and backing the match to go the distance seems a sensible way to avoid picking a winner, but Norrie should be able to turn the screw at this moment in time in front of a majority home support in London.
