World number nine Cam Norrie handed Benoit Paire two bagels in a straight-sets victory over the Frenchman, who was clearly in no fit mentality to play. 26-year-old Norrie looked the solid favourite to come through the match in any case as his remarkable form continues and he has been granted another kind fixture here against Joao Sousa. Norrie reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month and there is no reason why he cannot do so in New York, particularly as he is at home on a US hardcourt as a former college star.
